The war was sparked by the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand set of a chain of events that led to the world breaking out into one of the largest and most deadly conflicts in history. However, in my opinion the most significant cause of World War I was imperialism. Long before the war began European countries had competed for new lands and territories. Tensions between European powers rose during this time because they were racing to imperialize new lands and territories around the world. They wanted to gain control over foreign resources, markets and people to use to benefit their own country and increase their influence around the world and gain recognition and power for their country. Countries also chose to begin imperializing other nations because there was a lack of supplies and resources in Europe. As imperialism continued, alliances and rivalries between nations began to form and tensions continued to increase across Europe. And after war was declared on Serbia these alliances that had been formed came into play. The alliances involved countries not only in Europe, but spread to other nations outside of Europe because they were imperialized by European nations. The artifact that I have chosen is a picture of three cats which represent Britain, Germany, and France; the cats in this picture are attacking a rat which represents Morocco. The drawing's title is in French and it reads, Le Troisième Larron, and the English translations of the title is The Third Thief. This picture is portraying imperialism because the cats are all struggling to get the rat, that’s the same thing as different powerful countries fighting to take over a weaker country for their economy, military, or political views. This picture connects back to the main idea because imperialism was one of the major causes of World War I because it led to tensions and alliances in and out of Europe.
